The fine print
Said on January 21, 2019 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) at the fourth annual MLK Now event in New York, in conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates. She followed it with: 'This is our World War II.' Reason ran the line as its subheadline the next day, and Inverse used it as its headline. Twelve years from January 2019 puts the end in 2031.
Later spin
May 12, 2019, on Twitter (reported by the Daily Mail): 'This is a technique of the GOP, to take dry humor + sarcasm literally and "fact check" it. Like the "world ending in 12 years" thing, you'd have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it's literal.'
