Shoko Asahara, 1993: 'I Am Certain That in 1997, Armageddon Will Break Out' — and Staked His Future on It
Aum's guru framed a Third World War as sure; the cult's 1995 sarin attack was their atrocity, not the prophesied Armageddon.
What was said
“I am certain that in 1997, Armageddon will break out. By 'break out' I mean that war will erupt and that it will not end soon. ... A Third World War will break out. I stake my religious future on this prediction. I am sure it will occur.”
— Shoko Asahara / Aum Shinrikyo (Second Set of Predictions, July 1993) · said Jul 1993 · due 1997
No world war or Armageddon broke out in 1997. Aum's 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack was their own atrocity, not the prophesied U.S.–Japan apocalypse. Asahara was later executed.
The Story
Shoko Asahara did not hedge. In 1993 he published that he was certain Armageddon would break out in 1997, staked his religious future on a Third World War, and mixed Nostradamus with nerve gas. The cult murdered in 1995. The world war declined 1997. Certainty, it turns out, is not a scheduling tool.
Receipts
Verbatim English from FAS reprint of Senate staff statement quoting Asahara's July 1993 Second Set of Predictions. One claim only: 1997 Armageddon / WWIII — not the cult's crimes as 'fulfillment.'
