Bengel's June 18
Pietist Scholar Bengel Calculated Christ's Return for June 18, 1836. The Math Held; June 18 Did Not Deliver
Father of modern textual criticism ran Revelation's numbers until they pointed at mid-June 1836 — Antichrist down, Satan bound, millennium on.
What was said
“June 18, 1836 A.D., will see the beginning of the thousand-year imprisonment of Satan and the destruction of Antichrist”
— Johann Albrecht Bengel (Württemberg Pietist scholar; Ordo temporum) · said 1741 · due June 18, 1836
June 18, 1836 was an ordinary Tuesday for Christendom. Bengel's 666-year key unlocked a timetable; it did not unlock the millennium.
The Story
Johann Albrecht Bengel could reconstruct a Greek New Testament and still treat Revelation like a ledger. From a 666-year 'number of the beast' key he built prophetic months, chronoi, and a finish line: June 18, 1836 — Antichrist destroyed, Satan imprisoned for the thousand years.
Jung-Stilling carried the date into popular German fiction; some Pietists trekked east waiting for it. Wesley read Bengel and mostly kept the date out of Methodist confessions.
The day came. Satan's thousand-year booking did not.
Receipts
Isaacs summarizes Bengel's Ordo temporum / Erklärte Offenbarung chronology: June 18, 1836 as start of thousand-year imprisonment of Satan and destruction of Antichrist (table from Krodel via Isaacs). Made-date 1741 follows Ordo temporum. Distinct from Claas Epp, who inherited the 1836 aura via Jung-Stilling.
