Calvary Chapel Before 1981
Chuck Smith Math: 1948 Plus Forty Minus Seven Put the Rapture Before 1981
The Calvary Chapel founder's End Times walked readers through fig-tree arithmetic that capped the Church's exit before Tribulation — and before 1981.
What was said
“I believe that the generation of 1948 is the last generation. Since a generation of judgment is forty years and the Tribulation period lasts seven years, I believe the Lord could come back for His Church any time before the Tribulation starts, which would mean any time before 1981. (1948 + 40 − 7 = 1981).”
— Chuck Smith (Calvary Chapel; End Times, 1978) · said 1978 · due Before the end of 1981
1981 closed without the rapture Smith’s arithmetic required. Later books kept the soon; the 1948–40–7 sum did not.
The Story
Chuck Smith did the generation math in public. Israel 1948, a forty-year generation, seven years of Tribulation: the Church had to be gone any time before 1981. End Times printed the equation so nobody had to invent it.
Future Survival sharpened the conviction — plans predicated on a return before year's end — with the usual 'I could be wrong' insurance. Congregations filled New Year's Eve seats anyway.
1982 arrived on schedule. The fig tree kept budding. The arithmetic did not get another forty years of silence from its author; the 1981 cap simply vanished from the sales pitch.
Receipts
American Vision quotes End Times (Word for Today, 1978) p.35 with the 1948+40-7 math. Same article: Future Survival (1980) — 'convinced that the Lord [would come] for His Church before the end of 1981' with a 'could be wrong' clause plus 'all my plans are predicated upon that belief.'
Soft hedge noted; the published terminus year is still 1981. Not a walk-back before the date failed.
