New Jerusalem on the Rhine
Melchior Hoffman Named 1533 for the New Era and Strasbourg as the Seat of the New Jerusalem
Same radical Reformation year as Stifel's math; Hoffman's dating failed and he spent the rest of his life in prison.
What was said
“The year 1533 was to inaugurate the new era; Strasbourg was to be the seat of the New Jerusalem.”
— Melchior Hoffman (Anabaptist preacher) · said 1530 · due 1533
1533 did not inaugurate Christ's New Jerusalem in Strasbourg. Hoffman's failed dating helped feed the Münster disaster; he spent the rest of his life in prison and was gone by about 1543.
The Story
Melchior Hoffman read Revelation and chose Strasbourg. 1533 would open the new era; the Rhine city would be New Jerusalem. The year opened on schedule in Strasbourg. New Jerusalem did not. Followers later moved the appointment to Münster — which went worse.
