Kelpius in the Wilderness

Transylvanian Mystic Kelpius Awaited the Apocalypse by the Wissahickon in 1694. The Creek Kept Flowing

Society of the Woman in the Wilderness crossed to Pennsylvania sure Revelation pointed at that year. No sign arrived; the hermits stayed.

What was claimed (paraphrase)

he came to believe with his followers… that the end of the world would occur in 1694

— Johannes Kelpius (and Johann Jacob Zimmermann's Chapter of Perfection / Society of the Woman in the Wilderness) · said 1693 · due 1694

1694 passed without the heavenly kingdom in the Pennsylvania woods. Kelpius's band kept celibate vigil by the creek for years afterward.

The Story

Johannes Kelpius read Revelation's woman in the wilderness and decided Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — not Asia Minor — was the address.

Johann Jacob Zimmermann's Chapter of Perfection booked 1694 for the end. Zimmermann perished in Rotterdam before the ship sailed; Kelpius took the magister's chair. About forty crossed on the Sarah Maria Hopewell, settled by Wissahickon Creek, and waited.

1694 produced no apocalypse. The hermits kept scanning stars and practicing celibacy. Kelpius himself was gone by 1708. The creek outlasted the calendar.
