Y2K Is Going to Rock Our World
James Howard Kunstler, April 1999: 'Systems Will Fail, Crash, Seize Up.' Y2K 'Is Going to Rock Our World'
The Geography of Nowhere author wrote a long personal statement predicting interlocking system failures, lost livelihoods and hardship from January 2000.
What was said
“Y2K is real. Y2K is going to rock our world. People will consequently suffer.”
— James Howard Kunstler (author and social critic) · said Apr 1999 · due January 1, 2000 rollover
The rollover brought scattered minor glitches and no systemic collapse. The BBC's verdict: 'Y2K bug fails to bite.'
The Story
Opening paragraph: 'Writing this in April of 99, I believe that we are in for a serious event. Systems will fail, crash, seize up, cease to function. Not all systems, maybe only a fraction, but enough, and enough interdependent systems to affect many other systems.'
He expected lost fortunes and jobs and, if outages lasted 'any longer than a week', problems of 'public sanitation and infectious disease.' He framed the scenarios as 'an exercise in human imagining'. Other Y2K calls: north-y2k-2000, yourdon-beirut-2000, hyatt-y2k-2000.
Later spin
In 2010 he wrote: 'I regard it still as a legitimate potential catastrophe that was averted.'
