Christopher Love's 1805 Quake

Chapbooks Credited Martyr Christopher Love With a Worldwide Quake in 1805

A Stirling pamphlet put a global earthquake on Love's calendar for 1805, then everlasting peace. Love had been dead since 1651; 1805 passed without the crack.

What was claimed (paraphrase)

A great earthquake over all the world in 1805. God will be universally known by all people. Then a general reformation and peace for ever, when the people shall learn war no more.

No worldwide earthquake, no instant universal peace. The martyr's name sold better than the calendar.

The Story

Christopher Love lost his head on Tower Hill in 1651. A century and a half later, Scottish and English presses still found him useful. Chapbooks titled The Strange and Wonderful Predictions sold a ladder of dated disasters under his byline — wars, Popery's fall, a blood moon — climaxing in 'a great earthquake over all the world in 1805,' then everlasting peace.

The math sat beside Daniel and Revelation the way all good apocalyptic arithmetic does. Buyers got a martyr's aura without a living prophet to interview.

1805 brought Trafalgar and Austerlitz, not a globe-spanning quake or the end of war. The pamphlets kept Love's name in print anyway.

Receipts

Quote is consecutive lines from the 1806 Stirling chapbook text on Wikisource (also lists 1779 earthquakes, 1780 wars, 1790 fall of Popery, 1800 moon as blood, 1803 trembling continents). Love was executed 1651; these dated calculations are later attributions sold under his name.

Filed as general popular chapbook belief; made around the turn of the nineteenth century as pamphlets circulated before/around the 1805 target (1806 edition opened this session).
