The Cradle That Stayed Empty

Joanna Southcott, Age 64, Announced She Would Birth the Messiah Shiloh on October 19, 1814

Seals of the Lord, a sealed box of prophecies, and a due date; followers waited past her death, and no messianic child appeared.

What was claimed (paraphrase)

At the age of 64, Southcott claimed she was pregnant with the new Messiah, the Shiloh of Genesis (49:10). 19 October 1814 was the planned delivery date, but Shiloh failed to appear.

— Joanna Southcott (British prophetess) · said 1814 · due October 19, 1814

No messianic child was born on Oct. 19, 1814. Southcott expired in late December 1814; followers delayed burial hoping for resurrection until decay forced the issue.

The Story

Joanna Southcott sold seals promising a place among the 144,000, then announced that at sixty-four she carried Shiloh, the messianic child, due October 19, 1814. The cradle stayed empty. Weeks later she was gone. Followers kept the body warm with hope until reality — and odor — intervened. The sealed box of prophecies is still looking for twenty-four bishops.
