Only 10 Institutions Left Delivering Higher Education in 50 Years
Udacity's Sebastian Thrun, 2012: In 50 Years Only 10 Institutions Worldwide Will Deliver Higher Education
During the MOOC boom, the Stanford AI professor told Wired that online courses would collapse the university sector to ten providers, his startup possibly among them.
What was claimed (paraphrase)
In 50 years, he says, there will be only 10 institutions in the world delivering higher education
— Sebastian Thrun (Stanford professor; founder of Udacity) · said Mar 2012 · due 50 years from 2012 (2062)
The fine print
Wired's paraphrase from Steven Leckart's 'The Stanford Education Experiment' (Wired, April 2012), not a direct quote. Wired's 2017 look-back: 'there would be only 10 institutions in the world delivering higher education—and Udacity could be one of them. Reality: MOOCs are still around, but they're hardly dominating the higher education scene.' Udacity later moved away from university-style courses.
