Hans Hut's Pentecost
Anabaptist Hans Hut Booked Judgment for Pentecost 1528. He Died in Jail First
He sealed the elect for the violent arrival of Christ's kingdom and cut short his mission to wait among the 144,000. Prison fire got there sooner.
What was said
“He expected the 1528 coming of the Kingdom of God in the form of a violent apocalyptic imposition of the rule of Christ.”
— Hans Hut (Anabaptist preacher / Müntzer-influenced radical) · said 1526 · due Pentecost 1528 (May 31)
Hut perished in Augsburg prison in December 1527 after a fire. Pentecost 1528 arrived without the imposed kingdom he had awaited among the 144,000.
The Story
Hans Hut baptized hard and dated harder. After Augsburg Pentecost 1526 he preached a kingdom that would arrive by force — Christ's rule imposed, the 144,000 sealed — and he put the appointment on Pentecost 1528.
He shortened his own mission tours so he could be among the elect when the day came. Town councils preferred him in a cell. Arrested after the Martyrs' Synod of Augsburg in 1527, he perished that December when fire filled the prison; the authorities burned the corpse the next day for good measure.
Pentecost 1528 still arrived. The violent kingdom did not.
